Letter from the founder of DEMCA (Douglas Edward McAslan)

When I entered the world of Valve Actuation in 1978, I had never heard of an electric Actuator. But after having worked for almost 45 years in the South African actuation market, I have learnt a considerable amount on the subject.

The most significant is that not a lot of people know much about actuators. Over the years, when I have been asked what line of business I’m in, I always reply that it is a “conversation killer”. When pushed for a more specific answer to their question, and I reply Electric Valve Actuation, almost without exception there is a blank expression on the face of the individual.

There is no doubt however, of the integral role electric actuation plays in a multitude of industries throughout the world. At DEMCA we have a great deal of knowledge and experience of electric valve actuators – which we wish to share with anyone who is interested. At DEMCA we use this knowledge to quote, supply, install, commission and provide after sales service to our customers, and always endeavour to do so economically while meeting their ACTUAL needs. At DEMCA, we are not satisfied until our customer is satisfied.

Although the African continent has numerous financial challenges, in providing infrastructure for an ever increasing population with (water and waste water treatment being one of these), we continue to see valve actuator specifications that are unneccessarily expensive and that only benefit one specific manufacturer. If the end user is prepared to be better informed on where he need not be extravagant, DEMCA are very willing to assist.
